today`s new age capitalists like the ambanis are very happy. the economy is looking up. the growth rate is set to rise further even from 8%. the companies quarter on quarter profits are steadily rising.

In all this just a little pause. Gandhi ji when asked whether he disagreed with capitalism, remarked that people who have a genius to make money, should be encouraged to do their job, but they should plough back a substantial amount of their earning into society.

these new age capitalists, as far as my knowledge goes, have failed completely on this front. ms. ambanis, whose husbands empire run into 1000`s of crores, one runs a school for rich kids with lakhs of rupees as fees, while the other promotes art events.

beyond a point money, other than giving a feeling of power, loses all value. but i think the ambanis and other present day capitalists neither have the world view nor the sensibilities to part with a little of their money.

their greed knows no bounds. and their foolishness. for it is their foolishness in not ploughing back into society a little bit of their money, that will set the tide against capitalism and sound it`s death knell. and then they will rant and rave and shout and complain and protest.

but then they will have nobody to blame but themselves.

You are right and if not any philanthropic activites they can at least make sure that their refineries work fine.I am sure you know about their refinery that caught fire yesterday and now rates of LPG will go up! And going by their track record this could be a racket! Ambanis have always come across to me as "chors"; thieves is a sophisticated word for them.

Bob,
Ambanis (and others for that matter) could certainly take a leaf out of Tata social contribution book - no question. But before we get all judgmental, remember everyone in their brotherhood would throw similar criticisms at Bill Gates just a few yeas ago. Closer home, it is only in last few years Premji (Wipro Chairman) has made substantial contributions to social causes (female education). History has shown us that most of the vilified capitalist of their times turned out to be the most generous philanthropists. Carnegie, Rockefeller, and now Gates.

Having said that, I do agree that more can be done sooner. Google, not yet 10 is doing well in this regard. Let’s hope Ambanis and other rising capitalists in India make us proud of their social contributions as much as they have made us proud of their success in the business world. But let’s not feel entitled to anything or grudge them their success – because it takes a lot of hard work and dedication to get where they are.

Mrs. Ambani running a school for rich kids is a business venture – and per your post a seemingly successful one. I do not have any problem with that. Should she be volunteering some of her time towards a socially beneficial activity? Perhaps, but then so should each one of us.

Peace.
